Corby’s

Last weekend, my friends and I went to Corby’s. Here’s my review:
Corby’s is an Irish pub most noted for its 15 seconds of fame in the film “Rudy.” So, as I’m sure you’ve already guessed, this bar attracts a lot of Notre Dame fans.
This is both a positive and a negative.
It’s a positive in that: I’m a Michigan fan and I’m saying this, Notre Dame fans are fun people to drink with, especially after the Irish have won.
On the negative side of things, Corby’s definitely draws one type of guy or girl. You very rarely see any deviation from the Corby’s regulars. It becomes very cookie cutter after a while.
Don’t get me wrong. Specialty bars are great, but not when everyone looks similar. It’s like a damn Gap commercial in there at times. Where’s the fun in that?
Corby’s is one of those bars that is a blast one weekend and pathetic the next. It all depends on a few variables.
First and foremost, your mood; you have to be in the mood for a place like Corby’s.
Secondly, to have a really good time at Corby’s you’ll need to start out with a decent group of friends. It’s sad, but most of the people at the bar don’t venture far from their respective groups.
Now that I think of it, this place is starting to sound like a preppy high school in a way. Not really cool.
Saturday nights are good but be prepared to pay a $5 cover during ND home games or whenever they decide to have a live band.
One thing I like about Corby’s is it’s setup. As far as bar layouts are concerned, Corby’s is damn good.
You’ve got the bar area, a dance area/lounge, a pool table area (3 tables), and then an outdoor area.
The dance floor area is premium, especially when our Korean friend got lit on screwdrivers and decides to impersonate Michael Jackson. Definitely good for a laugh or two.
One thing I hate about Corby’s is the bar hogging.
You work your way through the crowd to get a drink and some cool jerk is posted against the bar sipping a Blue Moon and playing the role of voyeur.
Not cool. I got things to do.
All in all, Corby’s is a fun place to spend a night, but gets deducted for its inability to attract more diverse crowds.
Corby’s bar gets 3 mint field vomits out of 5.

I have to disagree about the GAP reference and say it’s more the Abercrombie crowd or those less affluent, American Eagle crowd. I wholeheartedly agree about the cookie cutter crowd. The bigger problem is similar to any college town (which South Bend is not a true one) that Notre Dame students stick to their own crowd and with that they think they have a legitamcy to “owning” this space. My favorite time of the year there is summer time when it’s justs a townies and Benders.
